Why Libraries Are Missing When Opening Older Projects in Archicad 29

Understanding the Change in Archicad 29

Many users upgrading to Archicad 29 are encountering missing library parts when opening older projects. Objects, doors, windows, surfaces, and other library-based elements may appear as missing or unavailable, even though the project previously worked correctly in older versions of Archicad.

This change is related to how Archicad now handles Migration Libraries.

In previous versions, the older Monolith Migration Libraries were automatically installed together with Archicad. These libraries ensured compatibility when opening projects created in earlier versions. However, starting with Archicad 29, these Migration Libraries are no longer installed by default.

As a result, projects that still rely on older Monolith Libraries now require the Migration Libraries to be downloaded and loaded manually.

Why This Happens

Older Archicad projects were built using the traditional Monolith Library system. These libraries contained thousands of embedded and linked library parts used across projects over many years of Archicad development.

When a project created in an earlier version is opened in Archicad 29 without the required Migration Libraries installed, Archicad cannot locate the necessary library parts. This leads to missing content warnings and incomplete project elements.

This is not a project corruption issue — it simply means the required legacy libraries are not currently available to the project.

The Shift Toward Global Libraries

The removal of automatic Migration Library installation is part of a larger transition within Archicad.

Since Archicad 28, Graphisoft has introduced the new Global Library system. Unlike the older Monolith Libraries, Global Libraries are designed to modernise library management and reduce the repetitive migration workflows users traditionally experienced with every major Archicad upgrade.

The new system improves:

  • Library organization

  • Version management

  • Upgrade workflows

  • Long-term project compatibility

However, many existing projects still rely on the older Monolith Libraries, which is why Migration Libraries are still required for those projects today.

Resolving Missing Libraries

When opening an older project in Archicad 29, the required Migration Libraries can be manually downloaded, installed and loaded into the project using Library Manager. Once loaded, the missing library parts are restored, and the project can function normally again.

Although this resolves the immediate issue, it still means the project remains dependent on the older Monolith Library workflow.

This is one of the reasons why many firms are now beginning to transition projects toward the newer Global Library environment introduced in Archicad 28.
